As the 2016/2017 season draws to a close I think we can safely conclude that it was one of the worst seasons ever for Niseko with less than 8m of cumulative snowfall. Was lucky enough to squeeze out 3 pow days out of my week there in Feb 2017.
Looking for a hassle-free, ski-in-ski-out option ? See my thoughts about these two popular family-friendly resorts in Hokkaido.
Pretty scary going on my first solo trip but in the end I made some great new ski buddies- Forever alone no more!
Chitose is one of the best airports to “lepak” (loiter) at while waiting for the ski bus- One stop shop for all Hokkaido goodies!
A most worthy contender for the best resort-style ski hotel in Hokkaido.
I normally avoid all-inclusive resorts but since I was going solo I decided to join a group trip organized by YMCA Outdoors Singapore. Thankfully I met some other fun-loving solo travellers on the trip and overall we had a great four days with some 30cm of new snow. Loved the resort (ski area), hated the hotel.
If you just want to see snow / play snow, you DO NOT need to go all the way to a large or “famous” ski resort as these require more time and effort to access. There are less well-known ski resorts less than one hour from Sapporo that you can visit on a day trip and have a fun snow experience.
