SA2013 Day 1: Self-driving Johannesburg to Kruger (4-5 hours)

KNP is about 400km north-east of Johannesburg airport. This is our first time self-driving in Africa and we have heard horror stories about carjackings, but our fears are unfounded. It’s a relaxed and scenic drive on good roads, similar to driving in Australia.

SA2013 Day 2&3: Self-driving Kruger National Park

We chose KNP for our first safari experience as it is the largest. It is also a Big 5 park (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino). Self-driving is the cheapest way to “do” KNP and you can find all necessary information online on the SANParks website. The road network is good, you don’t need to rent a 4WD. We were quite lucky and checked off the Big 5 in just 2 days despite being total safari noobs.
